Kohana Japanese Restaurant is well known in the Fort Campbell-Clarksville area for having the best sushi in town as well as a chic atmosphere with reasonable prices. With a large menu you can be confident that you will find something new for your family.
Kohana opened in September 2007 in Clarksville, followed by the 2010 opening of the Hendersonville location and the 2012 opening in Nashville at the Green Hills Mall.
Owners of the Clarksville location, Steven and Karman Kalinowski, gave me the opportunity to learn how to make sushi in their restaurant. I’m new to eating sushi so I was nervous that it would be difficult to master.
Andy Lam was our teacher, and he explained each task slowly while showing us exactly what to do. We started with small handfuls of rice and spread them evenly over seaweed paper. Depending on which sushi roll we were making, we started building our roll accordingly.
It turned out to be a lot easier than I thought. It was fun and it’s truly a talent to produce such perfect sushi rolls.
After our rolls were complete we were fortunate enough to be able to sample several of the restaurants most popular entrees. They were all amazing!
For first time sushi eaters, Karman recommends trying their Clarksville roll. The Clarksville consists of snow crab mix, avocado, crab stick and masago.
My personal favorite is the Super Bowl. It consists of tempura shrimp, cream cheese and asparagus. It is then deep fried and topped with baked spicy crab.
For little eaters, Kohana will replace many of the roll’s seaweed paper and exchange it with soy paper. This creates an easier eating experience for young children. They also have sushi rolls that are made up of fruit, sure to be a hit with kids.
Kohana will soon be offering classes to the public for anyone that is interested in expanding their knowledge. I would highly suggest looking into these classes when they become available.
You can stay connected with what is happening with Kohana by searching for them on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
