By Summer Thornsberry
Jill Boyd-Rager spends her time juggling work and family. Married a little over a year ago, this 34-year-old is a mother of two — Cameron Brown, 10, and Jaxsyn Wease, 4 — and helps her mother take care of her nieces, Addison, 9, and Riley, 6, and her nephew, John David, 4.
When she isn’t busy with her family, Jill can be found at Boyd’s Boutique and Formal Wear, a boutique shop she manages on Main Street, formerly known as Boyd’s Bridal.Where did Boyd’s Boutique and Formal Wear originate?
In 2000, my mother (Karen Boyd) was practicing to be a social worker. She had heard that Whitney’s Bridal was up for sale, and she thought that it would be fun to do as a family. In the summer of 2000, the name was changed to Boyd’s Bridal, and we took off on a new adventure. Prom and wedding was our main focus up until about a year ago. We got out of bridal and then changed the name to Boyd’s Boutique and Formal Wear.
What’s your current position?
Currently, I manage the store. I have worked there off and on for the last 16 years. I graduated nursing school in 2003, then went back to school for business management and accounting. I handle day-to-day operations, but I’ve learned once employed, there really is no telling what I will do there.
Do you think you will take over the company after your mother?
Yes, she is not there as much any more.
Did you expect the shop to go as far as it has in the past 16 years?
When my mother first opened in 2000, we didn’t sew or know much about retail at all. It has been a learning experience for sure, but a lot of fun. Over the course of the past 16 years, we have maintained and grown as a shop downtown. We recently just bought a trailer to do festivals and to do shows at home parties.
Where do you like to shop for your children?
We like to shop local when we can, but for the children. I like Gap, Gymboree, Matilda Jane, Target, anywhere really.
When you have free time, what
hobbies do you enjoy?
I don’t know what free time is — my oldest son, Cameron, plays three leagues of basketball. Jaxsyn and John David are also starting baseball soon. I love to cheer them on. When I can, I like to read and travel. I also enjoy all quiet moments.
What are some things you enjoy doing as a family?
We love to be outside, whether it’s ballgames, fishing, swimming or just going to
What is your family’s favorite local restaurant?
We love Las Fuentes. We seem to eat there a lot as well as Zaxby’s and Sonic. Kids rule our menu.
What are some summer traditions do you share with your family?
Florida, Orange Beach, the pool, fishing, swimming, travel games, really just soaking up the sun with my babies.
What do you love most about being a mother?
Definitely watching them succeed. Watching them learn and grow has been amazing. I can’t wait to see what their future has in store for them. I’ll be cheering them on every step of the way.
On a scale of 1-10, how excited are you about life right now?
10. I’m super busy, and always on the go. I work really hard to keep the business in check, as well and take care of my babies and be there for them. I really can’t wait to see all my hard work pay off in the end.
